Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fly into London instead?

Yes. Most flights from the U.S. will require a layover before reaching Edinburgh. If you find a flight itinerary you like, or if you're planning to spend time in London before or after the wedding, it’s absolutely possible to travel to Scotland from there.

If you prefer, you can fly into London Heathrow (LHR) and then:

  • Take a short flight to Edinburgh (about 1.5 hours), or

  • Take a train from London King's Cross to Edinburgh Waverley (about 4.5 hours, not including travel time between the airport and train station)

Keep in mind that door-to-door, the journey from London to Edinburgh typically takes around 7 hours total when you factor in transit between the airport and train station, transfer time, waiting, and possible delays. It’s a long journey, from the south of England to the north of Scotland, but it is doable, and the train ride in particular offers beautiful views along the way.

Do I need a passport to travel to the UK?

Yes, and please make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after the wedding date to avoid any issues at the border.

Do I need a visa to travel to the UK?

While valid passport holders do not need a visa, all U.S. citizens traveling to the UK will be required to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before boarding their flight. An ETA lets you visit the UK for tourism (like attending a wedding!) for up to 6 months and costs £16. This is a mandatory entry requirement starting in 2025. The application is quick and can be completed online.

What do I need to know about driving in the UK?

  • Visitors from the U.S. can legally drive in the UK using a valid US driver’s license. No international driving permit required.

  • Cars drive on the left side of the road with the driver sitting on the right side of the car.

  • Most rental cars are manual (stick shift). If you prefer automatic, be sure to request it when booking.

  • Roads in the countryside can be narrow and winding, so take it slow and enjoy the views.

  • Parking is generally easy at most accommodations and attractions in Fife, including our wedding venue.

Where do I rent a car from?

You can rent a car either from Edinburgh Airport or from Edinburgh City Centre, depending on your travel plans.

If you're flying into Edinburgh and heading straight to Fife, the airport is the most convenient place to pick up a car. Major rental companies (like Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis) operate from the airport, and you can get a quote directly through the Edinburgh Airport Car Hire site.

If you’re planning to spend time in the city before or after the wedding, you might prefer to rent a car from Edinburgh City Centre. Companies like Enterprise and Avis have multiple locations throughout the city, including near Edinburgh Waverley train station.

Wherever you choose to rent, we recommend booking your rental car at least 2–3 months in advance to get the best availability, especially if you prefer an automatic transmission (which is less common in the UK). Booking earlier can also help you lock in better prices.

How do I book train tickets?

You can book train tickets in advance through Trainline, a popular and easy-to-use website and app for UK rail travel. Tickets can also often be purchased in person at major stations, such as Edinburgh Waverley, from ticket machines or staffed counters.

Booking ahead is recommended for the best prices and seat availability, especially if you're traveling on popular routes or during peak times.

What currency is used in the UK?

The currency in the UK is the British Pound Sterling (£). In Scotland, you may notice Scottish banknotes, which look a bit different from those in England—they’re equally valid and accepted throughout the UK.

Do I need to carry cash?

Card is king—so to say— in most places across Scotland, including small towns and rural areas. Credit and debit cards (especially those with contactless) are widely accepted. That said, it’s handy to have a small amount of cash on hand for things like market stalls, parking, or tipping.

What is the tipping culture in the UK?

Tipping is appreciated but not expected in the same way it may be in some other countries.

  • In restaurants, if a service charge isn't already included, a tip of 10–15% is appreciated but not required. Sometimes you won’t even be given the chance to add a tip.

  • For taxis, rounding up or adding a pound or two is typical but again, not required.

  • In pubs and casual cafes, tipping is not expected.

What kind of weather should I expect?

July in Scotland is generally mild and pleasant, but also famously unpredictable. Expect daytime temperatures around 60–70°F (15–21°C), with a mix of sunshine, clouds, and the occasional light rain. It’s also worth noting that the wind can be strong, especially near the coast, and can make the temperature feel cooler than it is—so packing layers is key.

Bring a light waterproof jacket, comfortable shoes, and be prepared for a bit of everything.

Good news: all planned wedding events at Cambo will be indoors or have easy access to indoor spaces, so you’ll stay comfortable no matter the weather.
